En 1986, I took these photos of my sister Jana, one of the first with my camera. We
shared a small studio in Seattle, having fled our home before 18, without a diploma.
In an abandoned house, I found a roll of 1930s wallpaper and a vintage blouse for
this portrait. I used makeshift lighting, often dangerous, to take the shots. Despite the
smell of burning in the apartment, these photos remain among my favorites.
